Are Football Players Putting their Teeth at Risk?

An athlete has a 10% chance of receiving a dental injury every season of play. Five million teeth are knocked out in sports-related injuries every year in the U.S. That’s more than car accidents and violence combined.

There have been quite a few toothless wonders in NFL history. 49ers legend Bob St. Clair once lost five teeth from another player’s kick while trying to block with his head. He continued playing.
Many other players have lost, damaged or chipped their teeth during a game: Larry Wilson, Jack Lambert, Vince Lombardi.
Most teams keep a dentist on standby these days. Dr. Dan Matthews is the dentist with the New England Patriots and goes everywhere with his team wherever in case of dental emergencies.

However the Superbowl plays out on Sunday, we should appreciate that these players are fighting tooth and nail (sometimes literally) for their teams and supporters.
Not only can a mouth guard protect the teeth superficially, but also can help prevent concussions.
