George Washington's Teeth

Arguably the most famous myth about the first president is hardly true.Washington indeed had false teeth. In fact, by the time of his first inauguration, he had only one real tooth left, but his dentures were not made of wood. At various times throughout his life, he wore dentures made of human teeth, ivory, and lead. In one set of teeth, his dentist, Dr. John Greenwood, used a cow’s tooth, one of Washington’s teeth, hippopotamus ivory, metal and springs. Because of their poor fit, his various dentures distorted the shape of his mouth, and, needless to say, were extremely uncomfortable.

Safe and Comfortable Dental Options to Ease Your Fear & Provide You a Pain-Free Experience

Statistics tell us that out of the 265 million people in the USA, 145 million have serious anxiety about going to the dentist so they put it off. And honestly, you can't blame them. For instance, say you're deathly afraid of spiders. So would you go out and purchase a pet tarantula? Heck no! It's the same thing. People who fear the dentist are only going to go when absolutely necessary and even then, it might take some work to get them to walk through the door.

Based on these facts, Dr. Lawrence Kaplan
entered the profession in 1970 with the realization that people's biggest objection to going to the dentist was fear of pain. Since then, delivering pain-free dental services has been his mission, and he teaches others around the country techniques to make this happen. Relationship building is an important part of Dental 2000. Dr. Kaplan and staff spend a considerable amount of time with new patients learning about their lives and passions. They take an interest in not only building a long-lasting professional relationship, but a friendship as well. Dental 2000 welcomes people to a happy dental home because that's exactly what it is, a home. Patients become family here.
Dental 2000 NJ Office
So where exactly does the pain-free part come into play? Dr. Kaplan takes pride in his promise to provide pain-free dentistry to all his patients or they do not pay for the visit. Yes, that's right. They DO NOT PAY! Now entering his 33rd year of servicing the community at Dental 2000, Dr. Kaplan has never had to refund any patient due to pain during a procedure. Sound too good to be true? Trust me, it's not.

Dental 2000 offers a few different options to ensure a pleasurable, pain-free experience at the dentist. The most common being numbing gels and Novocain. The team of talented dentists numb the area using a gel prior to injecting the gums with Novocain. The end result is that you don't ever feel the needle numbing you up or the work being done!

Another option available is nitrous oxide, most commonly known as laughing gas. Dental 2000 offers this to patients at no additional charge as a courtesy. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Your dentist will ask you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed. (1)

Lastly, an option that the most fearful of patients prefer is conscious sedation. With this, a pill is taken the night before a dental procedure and the morning of the procedure. Patients must be driven to Dental 2000 where the rest of the sedation takes place. Imagine being able to accomplish all your dental care in as little as one or two relaxing appointments. With no more anxiety! No discomfort during or after procedures –and no groggy feeling! And little or no memory of the treatment! Dental 2000 does not allow patients to leave on their own either, as a companion must pick them up and accompany them throughout the day until the medication wears off. Patients have no recollection of their treatment and their fear disappears! This works especially well for patients who are in need of quite a bit of work, as the dentist can get a majority or all of it done in one visit.

At Dental 2000, we don't judge anyone. Whether you've been to the dentist 5 months ago or 5 years, we value and appreciate everyone that comes to us for help. Dr. Kaplan and Dental 2000's goal is to provide the ultimate experience in comfort, health and beauty delivered in a pain-free manner. After all, would a dentist promise you a money back guarantee if you experience pain if he couldn't back it up?!

As if the pain-free part wasn't good enough, Dental 2000 is a multi-specialist dental spa with full-time hygienists and general dentists on staff, as well as an orthodontist, periodontist, and oral surgeon. Convenience is a main priority with patients, so Dr. Kaplan doesn't have to refer patients out to see other specialists. Other benefits include State-of –the- Art Technology, flexible financing options, same day emergency visits, walk-ins, and evening & weekend appointments to accommodate busy schedules. And that's not even the best part!

Dental 2000 operatories all come equipped with Netflix and Pandora so you can listen to your favorite tunes or catch up on the latest movies during your visit. Can't find a babysitter? Dental 2000 does see children starting at age 2 so you can bring them in for an exam or they can hang out in our kid's room where we have PlayStation, games and other activities to keep them occupied during your visit.

A lot of our patients with kids can't wait for their appointments because it's their time to relax! Dental 2000 offers candlelight spa dentistry using aromatic organic candles, ideal for reaching one’s inner calm. Soothing music delights the senses and relaxes the body and mind. Celebrate the beauty of simplicity while Dental 2000 sets the right mood for relaxing even while at the dentist. Candle light dentistry is available for any patient undergoing any procedure. This technique was adopted to make the patient feel at home and serene, relieving any stresses you may have. Also offered are paraffin wax hand treatments along with heated neck pillows! Anything to make patients comfortable and at ease!

Dental 2000 is always welcoming new patients. We have no limit to the amount of new patients we schedule in our office! Can Your New Year's Resolution Be Linked to Your Dental Health?

Everyone sets a resolution for the new year, whether they stick to it or not. But did you realize that many of those resolutions link back to dental health. For instance, you want to save more money in the new year. Well, preventative dentistry such as regular exams and cleanings is a heck of a lot cheaper than negligence. Only going to the dentist when a tooth is bothering you can cost you. When you're experiencing pain or discomfort, that's a sign you've waited too long to see the dentist. And the work you'll need done is most likely more expensive than a regular cleaning and exam every six months.
Another example is making the resolution to get healthy and become more active in the new year. I bet you didn't know that the mouth is actually a gateway to overall health. Look at this chart explaining the effects of poor oral hygiene on your whole body. Pretty shocking, huh? Thus, getting healthy and staying healthy starts with taking care of your dental health and hygiene.

Another popular resolution is to be less stressed. Stress can actually reek havoc on your oral health! According to WebMD, too much stress affects your whole body, including your mouth, teeth, and gums. The potential impact includes mouth sores, such as canker sores and cold sores, clenching or grinding your teeth, not taking care of your teeth, eating a bad diet, gum (periodontal) disease or worsening of existing periodontal disease, and bad habits like chewing your nails, ice, pencils, or other objects which can damage your teeth. This too links back to your resolution to save money/get out of debt. Stress can lead to unexpected dental visits and procedures which I'm sure were not anticipated in your budget.
The list can go on and on about how any resolution can link back directly or indirectly to proper dental health. You know the saying, you only have one life to live? Well, you only have one mouth during that life so why not take care of it?!
Dental 2000 is entering it's 33rd year of servicing the community under the lead of Dr. Larry Kaplan. Our unique approach to dental care is designed to integrate an awareness of your health, nutrition and well being in conjunction with a comprehensive assessment of your dental needs and values. Embark on a wondrous journey into a world that transcends all expectations of any trip to the dentist you have ever experienced. We promise to offer the ultimate experience in comfort, health and beauty in a PAIN FREE manner or you DO NOT pay for the visit. What other office do you know that has that guarantee?!
Dr. Kaplan and his caring team use the latest technology to create beautiful and healthy smiles! We are pleased to offer our patients the following services in a friendly and comfortable environment.

Totowa, NJ (PRWEB) December 23, 2014
Dr. Larry Kaplan and Dentists from across the nation gathered with US Marines in November for the MGE Annual Benefit Dinner to raise funds for the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. This year’s event raised funds for hundreds of thousands of new books and audio books for the Toys for Tots Literacy Program that will go to underprivileged children this Christmas. It represents another major strike in the battle being waged against illiteracy and helping underprivileged children break the cycle of poverty.
The Benefit Dinner raising funds to help these children was kicked OFF with the Clearwater High School Marine Corp Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp Color Guard and Drill Team. Their Senior Marine Instructor is Lt. Col. Kirk Kumagai U.S. Marine Corp (ret).
During the event presentation, Captain Joseph Draeger of the U.S. Marines said, “Literacy is at the core of academic achievement for all children and it’s critical that we work together to help every child have access and exposure to books at home and in their communities. By giving the gift of reading to a child in your life or a child in need, you are not only opening up a world of opportunity for them, but you are giving them a lifetime of joy.”
In 1947, after WWII, Toys for Tots began in Los Angeles when Major Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservists collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. Then, in 2008, in order to do something about illiteracy, the Toys for Tots Literacy Program was launched with the mission to offer our Nation’s most economically disadvantaged children the ability to compete academically and succeed in life.
MGE Management Experts, Inc. located in St. Petersburg, FL, offers business and marketing training to the owners of dental practices. The training is based on the Hubbard Management System as recognized by the Hubbard College of Administration International that is used in more than 100,000 companies and organizations across the globe to their benefit and prosperity.
Dental 2000, a full service dental and wellness spa, has been serving the Passaic County Community for over 32 years. Time to Call the Dentist? 6 Signs Your Teeth Could Be in Trouble

general dentist
When it comes to dental problems, early detection is the best plan of action. But potential issues aren’t always as glaring as we would like them to be. A dental concern may not be accompanied by pain or obvious visual changes. You may not know its warning signs, making it all the simpler for it to sneak past your attention. Dental caries and gum disease are well-known bad guys, but are you aware of the symptoms of bruxism or a jaw disorder? This blog post will help you decide when it’s time to schedule an appointment, and what the issue at hand could be.

Signs of Common Dental Problems

  1. Your tooth surfaces are becoming worn. Worn teeth – what’s the big deal, right? In fact, tooth wear is a sign of many different dental concerns. The most pressing is teeth grinding, which wears down tooth enamel over time. It’s easy to tell when teeth have been exposed to years of grinding, but how do you tell if they’re just starting to erode? Look for flat, shiny patches on the occlusal (bite) surfaces of your teeth. If they’re starting to lose their shape, it’s time to get to the office and get a night guard.
  2. Your gums are receding. Your gum tissue should not change. While recession may be seen as a side effect of aging, it’s usually due to some larger problem. Gums may begin to recede due to chronic bruxism, gingivitis, or periodontal disease. Losing gum tissue can mean finding your sensitive tooth roots exposed and uncomfortable. Extreme recession can also result in loose teeth and even tooth loss.
  3. There’s any kind of persistent pain in your mouth. We say “persistent” pain because fleeting discomfort may not be the sign of a true problem. Your teeth can even feel slightly sore from overzealous oral hygiene, or from inconsistent flossing. But if the discomfort is ongoing, it needs to be tended to. You shouldn’t be spending your days feeling uncomfortable – you’ll find your mood and activities seriously affected.

  4. You’re waking up with sore teeth or a sore jaw. Morning discomfort in the jaw, face, or teeth usually points to a grinding problem or a TMJ disorder (a problem with one of the jaw joints). If left untreated, these issues can cause severe damage to the teeth and jaws. We’ll help you find a mouth guard that keeps your jaw functioning properly.
  5. You have unusual, ongoing bad breath. A bad taste in the mouth after waking up is one thing, but bad breath that refuses to go away is more sinister. It’s a sign of increased bacterial presence in the mouth, which is usually due to a cavity or gum infection.
  6. Your gums are swollen, red, or tend to bleed. These are all the textbook symptoms of gingivitis/gum disease. If you notice that your gums are puffy and uncomfortable, you need to take action right away. Stopping gum disease before it spreads or worsens will simplify your treatment and preserve your gum line.

Watch your citrus intake! The truth is that frequent exposures to acidic foods can erode enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay over time. So even though a a squeeze of lemon or lime can turn a simple glass of water into a fun beverage, it's not always the best choice for your mouth. Citric fruits and juices can also irritate mouth sores. Make sure to drink plenty of plain water.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, it is estimated that 1.5 million people experience intimate partner violence each year. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation's (AACDCF) Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program heals some of the most devastating effects of intimate partner violence, by restoring the smiles of adult women and men who have suffered damage to, or lost, their smiles at the hands of a former intimate partner or spouse.
